Tool envy

Figures it would take something like scrapbooking (and it's mass market appeal) to bring a tool to market that I have been dreaming about for the past 12 years. Computer controlled desktop paper cutters and now coming down in prices comparable to inkjet printers. If you can put up with Barbie Bake with Me Oven color scheme you can have a functional cutter for around $400. Maybe I'll buy one and do a Transformers paint mod.

Truth is it might be too flimsy for architectural models. This one though, for a grand... ooooh now that might work.

Think of the RSI that I could be saving myself from! Just like the 30" monitor is ensuring that I can see the faces of my grandchildren. This is an investment in my health!

Random mumbling

It's almost midnight and I'm just about to run out of zap-a-gap. The problem? I've just had something of a breakthrough and I'd really rather keep working. That and I just downed a bunch of coffee and trying to sleep will be futile. I have plenty of Sobo..but large doses caffeine and glue that that takes ten minutes to dry don't go very well together. So I'll post instead.

The pic? That's the 'Glen', where Shakespeare Santa Cruz holds part of it's summer festival. The model from part one is of THE TEMPEST...ack...just got bit by a mosquito! And on my face too.

Crud.

Anyway I'm designing the sets for THE TEMPEST and MUCH ADO which are the outdoor shows this year. The glen is a great natural amphitheater and a fantastic place to see a show. Remember to bring a picnic and some wine then sit back and enjoy the show.

A five minute walk or so from the 'Glen' is the 'Meadow'... you can actually see the trees that surround the glen in this panorama. You can almost see my office on the UCSC campus too, but not really. You can definitely see the Boardwalk down by the coast where I worked as a teenager. Don't ask me what I did there...you're better off not knowing.

SSC is pretty good about letting designers take photos so I should be able to post more of this project in the coming months.

I hate mosquitos.

The new cave

The new cave is still messy. Usually it's quite a bit cleaner than the old cave. At least 'my portion'...the rest of the cave is filled with furniture, boxes, filing cabinets, rugs and other random odds and ends that belong to the Interior Design Firm that actually owns the building. I just carve out a little space in the loft area. I share it with a crazy squirell who likes to chirp and me and steal bits and pieces from my models. I'm not certain what his name is... I call him Emerill, not for any particularly good reason other than when he's chirping I like to imagine that he's saying... "BAM, that's Good!"

The show opened with a finished set. It was down to the wire. The shop really kicked into high gear in the last week and everything came together. I'll post photos if we get a chance to do another photo call.

I don't have any photos yet. In fact, I may not ever get a chance to document the show as seen by audiences. Obviously the photo above is not of the finished set... it is missing molding on the transom, feet on the pillars and other various details... more to come?

This photo was created over the weekend... the set has definitely progressed since then. Tech starts Friday! I don't think that we will be entirely ready, but we will be actor safe.

I often start to dislike my designs towards the end of the process. I don't know why. I wish it wasn't that way. But it's true. For some reason that hasn't happened with this show yet.

There is still time.

Floor coming together

The floor for SSC's Sleeping Beauty. Kate, the paint charge, is doing a fantastic job. Everything is falling into place fairly quickly. And for that I am thankful, as we go into tech next week. Ack...

The floor should be finished up tonight (?) and then the carpenters will do a mad dash to get the set and other architectural elements in place. So the next couple updates should show a dramatic change.

In a word, no. I post to my flickr account on a regular basis but rarely find myself remembering that this little corner of the web exists. I'll try and do better, maybe.

Now that's encouragement to check back!

But for now, I am in tech for one show (The Raven @ Marin Academy) and final build for another (Sleeping Beauty @ Shakespeare Santa Cruz). After SB there are two secret projects that I don't want to jinx, or overhype...but life designing is busy and hopefully will stay that way.

Mostly I am adding an entry because I had to dig up my blogger passsword in order to cast a vote in another blog...
